Common AC Problems Caused by Thermostats
Now that we’ve experienced a few heatwaves, some homeowners have called about problems with their air conditioners. While many people do experience some AC problems, we’ve also noticed that some of these issues are related to the thermostat and can quickly be resolved without having to call for professional cooling repair.
- Incorrect Temperature Reading: To do its job properly, a thermostat needs to be able to get an accurate reading of the room’s temperature. Covering the thermostat, having a light right near the sensors or sunshine streaming in from the windows can give a false temperature reading that can affect the whole home. Make sure that your thermostat is in a location that’s giving an accurate reading.
- Wrong Thermostat Settings: While it may seem obvious, make sure that the settings on your thermostat are correct. Sometimes settings are inadvertently changed and can cause AC problems that prompt homeowners to call for repair. Make sure that the thermostat is set to “COOL” and not “HEAT”.
- Thermostat Not Working: Sometimes all you need to correct an AC problem is a new set of batteries. If your thermostat uses batteries, you’re going to need to replace them every once and a while. Some models will alert you when the batteries are low and need replacing, but if you wait too long, the screen might just go blank. Refer to your owner’s manual on how to properly change the batteries.
If the above fixes didn’t work, there might be a more serious problem that requires a call to a certified cooling specialist.
