Furnace Fan Keeps Running and Won’t Turn Off – HELP!

A furnace that is properly working will engage when the temperature in your home falls below what is set at the thermostat. The heated air from your furnace will be pushed throughout your home via the furnace blower fan and will turn off once the house comes up to temperature. However, in some instances, homeowners find that the furnace fan continuously runs and won’t turn off. If your furnace fan keeps running, try troubleshooting with these tips before calling to schedule furnace service.

Tip #1: Check Thermostat Setting

There will be a fan setting at your thermostat that controls the blower. If you do not want the fan running continuously, it should be set to AUTO so that it only engages when the furnace is on. If it’s set to ON, the furnace fan keeps running until the setting is changed.

Tip #2: Change the Furnace Filter

If you haven’t replaced your furnace filter recently, try swapping it out for a new one. A clogged filter obstructs the airflow through your heating system and can trip the fan limit switch to prevent the unit from overheating.

We hope that the above troubleshooting tips solved the problem, but if your furnace fan keeps running, you’ll likely need some professional heating repair and should schedule furnace service. Sometimes, the fan limit switch needs to be adjusted or replaced, or there could be faulty wiring at the thermostat. These types of furnace repairs should always be left to certified HVAC professionals.
