Secure Your Home During Your Labour Day Long Weekend

The last long weekend of the summer is quickly approaching and everyone is scrambling to get that last vacation in before school starts and the fall season sets in. If you’re planning on getting out of the city for Labour Day, take some precautions to ensure your home is secure while you’re away.

Don’t Advertise That You’re Away

One of the biggest concerns being away from home is having someone break in. There are a few things you can do to help deter would-be burglars from targeting your home:

  • Program lights to come on at night. A consistently dark house, night after night, is an invitation for criminals to consider your house a target.
  • Cut the grass and do some basic landscaping before you leave. Again, you don’t want to draw attention to your home and an overgrown lawn can be a sign that you’ve been away for a while.

Secure Doors and Window

With the nice weather we’ve been having, many people have flung their windows open to fill their homes with fresh air. Before leaving on vacation, take a few moments to ensure that all windows have been closed and locked. Additionally make sure you lock doors that might otherwise get left unlocked—doors on the side of the garage or the door that leads from the garage into your home.

Protect Your Systems

We are still in the midst of storm season and it’s a good idea to have a surge protector installed to protect your electronics. Additionally, you might want to keep an eye on your heating, cooling and water systems while you’re away. There are alarms that you can install to alert you of any problems or if you have a smart thermostat, they can be programmed to alert you of any abnormalities.
