Trade In Harsh Chemicals For Eco-Friendly Cleaners This Earth Day

On April 22nd, we celebrate Earth Day. Take a moment this weekend to see how small changes in your daily routine can have a positive impact on the environment and on your own health and comfort! Most commercial cleaners contain chemicals and toxins that are harmful to the Earth and can pollute our indoor air. Incorporate eco-friendly cleaners that can be mixed right in your home instead!

There are many recipes available online to create your own eco-friendly cleaners. Many call for ingredients that most people have in their pantries already, like vinegar and baking soda. On Earth Day, experiment with these recipes and see how well natural cleaners can work!

All-Purpose Cleaner

For everyday cleaning, keep a bottle of all-purpose cleaner around. All you need is one-part white distilled vinegar and one-part water. This cleaner can also be used on windows or mirrors for a streak-free finish.

To add a natural scent, soak citrus peels (lemons, limes or oranges) in vinegar for two weeks. Discard the peels and mix with an equal amount of water for an extra-strength cleaning solution.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Mix one-part baking soda with four-parts vinegar in the toilet bowl. Let the solution sit for fifteen minutes and then clean with a toilet brush. It will clean just as well as a commercial chemical cleaner but is gentle on the lakes and rivers and our health.

Natural Deodorizer and Air Freshener

Instead of filling your home with chemicals to make it smell nice, deodorize naturally and infuse light, natural scents into your environment. Fill a jar with half a cup of baking soda and stir in 15 drops of your favorite essential oil. The baking soda neutralizes the bad odors while the essential oil adds a hint of your favorite smell.
