Limit Dust During Home Renovations to Prevent Furnace Damage

Your heating system works hard to keep your home comfortable for everyone in the household. Unfortunately, many homeowners fail to realize the toll that home renovations take on their heating and cooling system and learn too late that simple steps during remodeling could have helped prevent furnace damage.

There are a lot of sources of dust and debris during a home renovation. Sawdust from cutting wood, particulates from sanding and fine white drywall dust that seems to cover everything in sight. All of these contaminants can end up in your heating system and cause a lot of problems if you don’t take steps to prevent furnace damage.

  • Cover vents if possible during renovations. Dust can enter the heating system through the vents and registers and cause a lot of problems that could require expensive furnace repairs down the line. Please remember that vents should only be closed if the furnace is off—running the HVAC system with closed vents could cause major damage to the unit.
  • Keep the furnace off if possible. To keep the vents closed, the furnace has to be off. Running the heating system during a dusty remodel can clog the system and spread the dust to other parts of the home.
  • Replace furnace filters regularly during a renovation—even more often than you normally would. Even with precautions, there will be some debris that makes its way to the furnace and gets trapped in the filters.

During a home renovation, there will be a lot of dust and debris floating around in the air. Take the necessary steps to keep those contaminants out of your heating system and help prevent furnace damage that could require expensive repairs.
