Prepare for Winter Storms and Power Outages Before They Happen

It’s not unusual for a heavy storm to hit and plunge us into darkness for a few hours—or days. Ensure that you’re ready for whatever Mother Nature brings and that you’re prepared for winter power outages before they happen. This includes having a well stocked and accessible emergency kit and taking the time to ensure your home is winterized to protect it—and you—during winter storms.

Emergency Kit

When a storm hits and the power goes out, the last thing you want to do is search for candles, matches and the battery-powered radio you thought was in the back of the closet. Put together the things that you would need during a power outage and make sure they are accessible in the dark.

Remember to include: lighting such as candles or flashlights, battery-powered or hand crank radio, bottled water, stocked first-aid kit and non-perishable food. Don’t forget extra water and food for any pets you may have.

Prepare Your Home

There are a number of things you can do to ensure your home is properly winterized and ready for any storms or power outages that may occur. Make sure you’ve stocked up on sidewalk salt, shovels and wood for fireplaces or gasoline for backup generators. Get all of your heating systems inspected and cleaned to help ensure that they’ll be ready to keep you warm during the freezing cold temperatures. Any backup heat options like generators or fireplaces should also be inspected.

Inside your home, you should ensure that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working. Both are proven to save lives and are especially important during winter storms when many people rely on alternate heating for their homes. Please remember: never use grills, generators or camping stoves inside.

Take some time before winter storms hit to make sure you’re prepared. If you have any questions about your heating system or want to schedule your annual furnace maintenance, contact us today.
