Don’t Neglect Your Indoor Air Quality this Summer

Everyone looks forward to the summer, where longer, warmer, fun-filled days are spent with friends and family. However, summer also means cut grass, pollinating flowers, increased humidity and shedding pets. Buttoning up our homes to keep the cool air in also means we’re trapping allergens and pollutants inside too—jeopardizing our indoor air quality.

Make sure you stay comfortable and healthy inside during summer months with our helpful tips!

Ensure Proper Moisture Levels

Do you ever feel like your house is just a little bit humid all summer? Instead of climbing into crisp, dry sheets at night, do they always feel just a little damp? Along with being uncomfortable, excess indoor moisture encourages mould and mildew growth, which opens the door to a wide variety of health problems.

While central air conditioners do pull some moisture from the indoor air, it’s not their primary function. If you find your home is extremely humid, you might want to consider installing a whole-home dehumidifier to increase home comfort and indoor air quality.

Inspect and Replace Air Filters Regularly

With windows shut, air has to recirculate throughout the home. If air filters are dirty and clogged, pollutants and allergens are being blown to all the corners of your home and can decrease the overall indoor air quality. Filters should be inspected monthly and replaced as needed—usually every 30 to 60 days. Also ensure that you’re using the right filter for your cooling system and specific needs.

Consider Germicidal UV Lights

Sometimes homes require more protection than a filter can provide. Ultraviolent germicidal light systems help you reach the highest indoor air quality possible by sterilizes and sanitizing air before it’s dispersed throughout your home. In just 45 minutes, these units can decrease airborne bioaerosols by half and can halt the buildup of germs in your home and HVAC system.
