All About Ductless ASHP Systems
With the announcement of the GreenON rebate for air source heat pumps—more homeowners are starting to hear about this alternative heating and cooling system. However, it can be confusing to understand how this system works and how it relates to the wider known ductless system.
Heat Pump Mechanics
Heat pumps work by transferring heat from one place to another—rather than producing it. They use a small amount of external energy—usually electricity—to transfer thermal energy. Because thermal energy is being transferred, heat pumps can be used to either heat or cool your home.
There are a few different ways to transfer heat using a heat pump. An air source heat pump (ASHP) transfers thermal energy from the air, while a ground source heat pump taps into the steady temperatures underground. ASHPs are the more popular option for Ontario homeowners.
Ducted and Ductless Options
An ASHP refers to the way that the heat is obtained—not the way it’s distributed throughout the home. ASHPs can either be ducted or ductless. In a ducted ASHP system—heat (and cool air) is distributed through the home via ductwork. Often when a homeowner switches from a furnace to a heat pump, they’ll use the existing ductwork.
A ductless ASHP refers to a system that doesn’t require ductwork to distribute air. Instead, the heated (or cooled) air travels from an outdoor unit—through a small pipe—to an indoor unit. These indoor units (also called heads) are mounted on the wall. Additional units can be installed to provide zoned heating and cooling throughout the space.
Ductless ASHP Benefits
Ductless ASHPs are an energy efficient way to heat or cool a space and can be installed without the need of intrusive ductwork. It’s a popular option for people that want to supplement or upgrade their current HVAC system.
If you’re interested in installing a ductless ASHP—don’t hesitate to contact us—we’re always willing to help. Remember that current GreenON rebates provide incentives for the ASHP installation.
