Holiday Heating Tips

As we get closer to the holiday season, excitement builds as decorations go up, presents get wrapped and the doorbell rings with friends and family gathering to spend time together. Amidst all the hustle and bustle, keep our holiday heating tips in mind to help ensure that this festive season is celebrated safely and comfortably.

Furnace Filter

Remember to replace the filter in your furnace for the holidays. Clogged furnace filters restrict airflow, which can lower the comfort in your home and even cause severe damage. Restricted airflow can overheat the furnace, leading to a complete breakdown that requires expensive repair. Don’t get caught with a house full of guests and no heat—check and change your filters regularly!

Thermostat

As you decorate your home, please be careful not to cover the thermostat with a tree, lights, or garland. A covered thermostat will not be able to properly sense the temperature and could cause the heating system to turn on prematurely or not at all—creating a less than festive mood in the home.

Vents

Be sure not to obstruct or close vents and registers. Avoid covering them with any decorations as they can choke the air distribution system. This can lead to unnecessary wear and tear on your system and cause the house to heat unevenly.

Christmas Tree

Christmas trees dry can dry out easily with the furnace constantly running. Please be sure to check the water level regularly and remember that there are benefits to installing a whole-home humidifier. Not only will your tree look healthier and keep its needles longer—you’ll notice a dramatic increase in your overall home comfort with more moisture in the air.
