How Long Does an Air Conditioner Last?

One of the most common questions we get asked during the warmer months is, “how long does an air conditioner last?” Some homeowners are installing a new AC and want to know how long they can expect their investment to last—while other homeowners are hoping they can squeeze a few more years out of their system. There are a number of factors that can affect how long an air conditioner will last, but generally, they’re good for about 10 to 15 years.

Maintenance is one of the biggest factors that contribute to how long an air conditioner lasts. Neglected systems often have shorter life-spans because they’re not being properly tuned-up, cleaned or adjusted. Yearly inspections and small repairs can significantly increase the unit’s efficiency and extend how long it will be able to keep your home cool and comfortable.

The other two factors that contribute to an air conditioner’s lifespan is the quality of the system and the quality of installation.

Usually, air conditioners last about 10 to 15 years, but a properly maintained cooling system can last even longer. If you haven’t scheduled your annual tune-up yet, be sure to book your appointment soon!
